i’m fifteen minutes into this interview with a black woman who works in a verizon warehouse in tennessee and she’s already told a story about how another black woman died on the warehouse floor and the foremen set up cones around her dead body and left her there for two hours while forcing all the other employees to continue working. and the woman being interviewed said that herself and four other employees suffered miscarriages while working because the foremen refused to honour their doctor’s notes saying that they shouldn’t lift heavy objects on the job. when she began to miscarry on the warehouse floor, she asked a foreman if she could go home because she wasn’t feeling well and she was worried about jeopardizing the health of her baby, he said, “why are you pregnant? you don’t need any more kids. go have a fucking abortion.”

okay so by “too much plot” i was talking about how really big life altering things are almost always happening in the show but the characters don’t really get any room to breathe or process these things. So there’s way too much happening but not enough emotion backing it up to really make us feel for it if you know what i mean. Like the show thinks it can make us feel just by throwing a bunch of new plot lines at us, when in reality it can do that by just focusing on a few plot lines carefully and giving them proper emotional backing
One example is when keith came back to the paladins after 2 freakin years You’d think he’d be happy or just emotional to see them after 2 years of isolation with his mom and kosmo, something to really make us feel like two whole years had passed for him, but he just acts like he saw them last week?
as for treatment of female characters I’m mainly talking about allura and lotor’s generals. For the past few seasons it feels like allura is just used by the plot whenever the character needs a get out of jail free card,,,,like she’s the human embodiment of a deus ex machina. Her being super powerful and capable is not the problem at all, my problem is how she’s always doing the most for voltron and the most for other characters but she doesn’t get a lot in return from the other emotionally, not even gratitude
one of those instances was when (and this will make me mad until im dead) allura returns shiro’s soul to his body and plays a huge role in bringing him back to life and shiro and keith don’t even say one thank you???? or say anything to her????? what keith DOES do instead is blame her for “cozying up” to lotor and insult her father to her face (i know they were all going crazy in that ep but of all people, keith should know how hurtful insulting someone’s dead parent is. What he said was still super fucked up)
and as for lotor’s generals, they have no autonomy of their own. They’re just used to move the plot forward which is why their desires change on a whim. One of them dies for no good reason, one of them abandons the rest to follow ANOTHER man, and the remaining two just do whatever tf with no real motive behind their actions. They were really given the short end of the stick in terms of character writing and it sucks because a lotta ppl were excited to see a diverse cast of female characters when they first showed up
as for “simplifying war too much” you may be right that being a kid’s show restricts them from diving too deep into that so i won’t really get into that too much right now,,,,but yeah this is how it be
